Confessions of a Wayward Vegan~

So again I lean into myself and ask ever so gently “can I now brand myself as a Vegan or am I still just a vegan hopeful?

Perhaps it’s still too early to know?

I’m pretty sure this is the start of week 5 in my vegan lifestyle and to be totally honest I did have two slips up initally.

Even though it’s been my intention for the past 4 weeks to give up what I still sometimes refer to as heavenly dairy (sadly admitting to cheese being my one true vice); it appears as each day slides past I am getting closer to being that true vegan that whispers the hard truth each time my mouth waters when  my nose calls me to see that pizza, cheese puff, cheese square, gouda, cheddar, cream cheese, greek yogurt (oh the list is too long) that my former ovo lacto vegetarian relished in consuming.

However as long as that  dairy list is….and as loud as those  products scream EAT ME … I know I am resisting as best I can and getting stronger and stronger every day with less and less cravings.

The bigger my heart gets when I look inwards at how happy I am to not hurt those innocent animals that have just as much right to live a pain free life as us humans do, the readier I feel to confess it’s not as hard as I thought it would be to leave the cruelty of dairy consumption behind.

The first oops was in that first difficult week when I was faced with nightmarish cravings, withdrawals and a temptation that proved too difficult to resist, especially after those two glasses of wine.

The devil came in the form of a homemade pizza that soon bubbled and sizzled with cheese and veggies made by one of my closest, dearest friends; who is also one of the best cooks Ive ever known.

Having announced my vegan intention she was so sweet offering to not add cheese, even though her puzzled face was of shock and disbelief. I thought I could resist but just before that homemade piece of heaven went into the oven as she fingered the mozzarella and parmesan every cell of me screamed “ADD THE CHEESE” as I lost all control and will power! She obidged!

Damn that pizza was good, and so far its been my last.

I know I’d like to blame the wine on my lack of will power that night but the truth is I just did not want to say no, maybe even couldn’t that evening, it was all so new.

Thinking back those first few days my cheese addiction cravings were stronger than my quitting smoking cravings, cause at least when I quit smoking … I had cheese ( my #1 comfort food).

The next weekend I again had another slip, the story was a similar one….girlfriend over, wine was involved …a cheese ball that again..won me over. This time again the cheese was very good however it did not ignite that “da da da dummmmm” feeling for me as my last cheese indulgence did.

I think this was when I realized that my cravings would eventually go away, perhaps forever.  I mean I had conquered the milk drinking issue over a year ago when my horrified family heard me announce NO MORE COW’S MILK!!!  A quick switch to almond milk did the trick while our family still occasionally clung to half & half cream for coffee as I went on telling myself  “well we are still not drinking milk” , a lie…kinda sorta.

It was not so difficult to release the other dairy & egg items such as butter, cream, mayo, the occasional omlet. I even found an amazing Veganise Mayo that is to die for, at least that’s how I felt when I tasted it.

It seems that cheese is/was to be my greatest challenge ever!

I think what happened next was also supposed to happen on my trail of life to further encourage me on my vegan path; it was the documentary I watched about a week and half ago called “Earthlings”. Ouch, did that hurt to watch!

If you are brave enough with a heart of steel, go for it here’s the link.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibuQ-J04eLQ

There certainly is no sugar coating in this film. I cried a lot, through most of it really , some parts I could not even look at even though I did my best to look at their pain and bear witness to the horrid lives our livestock (some may say food supply) are forced to endure.

There was no way for me to go back to seeing a cheese pizza the same again. I’m cured from my contribution to the cruel world of animal consumption forever.

I hope.

The Vegan I dare to be – My contribution to lessening global warming

Giving up the remaining animal products I consume has been forever on my mind, even more so in the last 3 years.

So just last week I decided to take the leap off the ovo-lacto vegetarian band wagon and wiggle my one unexcited toe over to the vegan ship; all the while fighting voices in my head screaming “noooooo (I hear that’s called dairy addiction).”

I have to admit I love (loved) dairy and have always held onto my truth (and believed) that the idea of consuming dairy was not contributing to animal cruelty issues. Not really a truth as parts of me did indeed know the facts but choose to wear those rose colored glasses, as many do.

Over the years I have whispered in my own ear a million of times “it’s ok, it’s not like the animal has to die or be harmed if I consume their products; at least I’m not eating its flesh for the past 20+ years; everyone else is the problem when it comes to mass consumption, production of meat products, salmonella and of course animal cruelty, not me!”

I hate the idea of animals being farmed like a conveyor belt in a factory like a pair of rubber gloves, they are living beings!

I even wrote a research paper a couple years ago about how the ozone layer is in part depleting due to the massive amounts of methane gas produced by the millions of cows farting which believe it or not are also contributing to global warming, yes farts. Of course if there were less demand of animal products than naturally there would be less of the farting problem, including dairy.

Them not me :)…. what a lie!

For those of you that wish to know more about global warming I watched an amazing little film called “How to boil a frog”, you too could learn amazing factoids about global warming which you may not know. This is a funny, well produced film which I learned a lot from.

Here’s the link if you want to check it out.

http://www.videoproject.com/howtoboilfrog.html

So back to my veganism, which of course everyone around me is horrified by hearing or even fathoming, me too i I dare say so myself .

Day 1 was last week on Monday June 1st. It was painful. I heard my dairy addiction screaming the whole day. It was hard, and I mean very hard. I’ve eaten raw for a few days without having dairy, I’ve even done a crazy 9 day juice fast with no dairy, yet this time is was different, this time it was only the dairy I cut out, and I noticed…let me tell you!

Day 2 was also difficult as I searched for food items to stuff my mouth as I longed for a Greek yogurt, cream in my coffee and cheese on my salad, sandwich, potato and whatever I could slap cheese on….did I say I loveeeee (d) cheese? Arggggg..I was not going to make it!

But I did.

I told myself if I could just get through the present, and not worry about the future, then maybe I could do it, one day, another one day, no stress no promises. And I did.

I reached Friday and patted myself on the back proudly. I did it, and lived!

By Thursday the craving had gone, the thoughts about wanting were still there, but the screaming inside my head of “grab that cheese” was not.

I’m not saying I’m perfect as I did fail to resist some awesome homemade pizza on Sunday past, but I didn’t beat myself up over it.

What I did notice from my indiscretion of eating dairy is that not only is it the dairy cows that get ….well……gassy……nope not at all.

But that’s a whole other thought!

FITBIT UPDATES – Week 7, 8 & Week 9 ( opps!)

Image result for walking

I know I know, you may think I’ve totally lost all motivation..but I’m happy to say no I haven’t lost my spirit for the walk !

Sometimes I take a social media break on purpose and other times my life rolls into a heaping mess of business which needs unravelling,  in other words no time to write :(.

So because I have been so terrible with my updates, I will add all three weeks in this one post, hold on to yer seats, but first a recap.

Week 7 – I actually hit over 95,000 steps however early in that week one day I dropped my fitbit and thought all was lost. I was thankful to find it later that evening but a whole day of walking was not recorded so I know that week was a good one.

Week 8- a little less motivated , but still averaging more than 8k a day

Week 9- picked up a little but had a migraine for almost 5 days, so it slowed me down for sure.

With my new workplace its been more difficult than I though to get into a routine of exercise and walking at lunch. Im doing better now, but I still need to really commit to walking at lunch or else hitting 10k/day is almost impossible.

Ill be losing one of my main motivations this weekend, a dog named Duke, however Im hoping my regular habit will be ingrained so deeply that I will not need this extra push after he leaves on Saturday.

He is a total sweetheart of a pup and a sweet soul of a dog which we have been caring for since February. Ill admit part of me wished many times in the cold months of February that I wished I didn’t have to go for that walk, but my commitment to this pup pulled me out and I thank him for it.

So here is the good,  the bad & the great ! :), Still loving my Fit bit HR!!

FITBIT UPDATES- WEEK 6

Image result for SHOES WALKING

Ahhh yes the smell of sweet, sweet VICTORY!

FINALLY !!!

I have totally finally OUTDONE myself, Phew! Its was a tough month wondering if that week would ever come showing I could outdo my best weeks walk in week 2.

I did it YES!!  At 72.45 km , giving me a daily average of 10.35 km per day, 104,394 steps for the week!! (wow, boy did I feel it).

Can I hear a woot woot !!

Im so excited! I only hope I can continue this momentum.

Last week I had a change in my work location and the office is sorta smaller in some ways, so I have been struggling to get my 10k in these past few days.

Last night I went for a walk with having only 4.7k for the day pushing myself to reach that 10k mark. I was determined!!! But gosh was I exhausted after. .

It took an extra long time as I helped the dog out with a nice walk, as I always do. But last night with spring in the air I suppose; he found each 5 steps just too much too resist and stopped more than usual.

So this 5.25k took almost 1.5 hours instead of my normal 45min  😦 (Im so leaving the dog home the next time).

As another side effect I was all pumped up and couldn’t sleep, my trusty FITBIT HR shows I had 4.39 hours sleep last night.

(Yawn, Im so tired today, go figure!)

I definitely need to get more sleep in general with my weekly average of 6.5 hours.

One cool thing I have noticed , and another reason why I love the heart rate monitor on my FITBIT, is that my resting heart rate has decreased to almost 10 points less per day in the past week….that is awesome, norm is 96-97, now is 85-86!

So wish me good luck and see you next week!

FITBIT Update- Week 5

Two weeks ago I told myself that I would set a new goal of 12,000 steps per day, as my previous goal was 10,000(although surpassing it often). Well I did do that, I set the goal, and I met the goal.  :).

What I failed to realize is that by setting this “new goal” I was actually setting myself up to underachieve my daily step count compared to my highest steps/km walked per week in weeks prior, or at least in my best weeks stats.

Of course I wasn’t really paying attention to when my FITBIT Weekly Summary began and ended for the weekly stats, but now I know its from Monday- Sunday each week.

I cant wait till next report as this week is only half over and my SCORES are already above my last highest score (tee hee hee).

A new goal (although challenging) is 10k a day..which really works out to approx 15,000 steps a day. I know I can do it!!!

Week 4 FitBit Updates!

So Week 4 was okay I suppose.

I was still not able to beat my best week 1 or week 2 stats as of yet…

.

Recap

Week 1- 89,635 Steps- 62.26 kl

Week 2- 95,067 Steps- 65.98 kl

Week 3- 62,165 Steps – 43.14 kl

Week 4-  87,628 Steps- 60.81kl

I suppose LIFE HAPPENS! And in that life, some really poopy stuff  falls on us, like losing someone we love, which frankly sucked the energy right out of me last week.

I’m still trekking and not giving up though, not at all! Now if I were to look at that based on an approx month of walking, Id say pretty impressive!!!

Total Kilometers walked in 1 month….232.19 kl

Life will always get in the way a little but I know I can outdo myself for my next weeks stats.

So here I go again! See you in week 5!

Fitbit Update Week 3 down!

Well I was hoping I could have better stats this week however the darn flu bug gotz me and my entire household on Easter weekend..of course being the strongest (I’m guessing), I got hit last on Easter Monday & the next day, blah!

.

Last week had me stepping high with 95,067 steps & 65.98kl, this week is a little  less ( see below)

I’m feeling pretty good now though (sorta, still grieving the loss of my beautiful family member) but feeling more and more confidant about my steps.

I’ve decided I will be a teenie bit brave starting today and set my new goal for 12,000 steps a day. The weather is nice and I plan to suck in as much natural vitamin D as I can with the great outdoors and lunch time walks..wish me luck!

Fitbit Summary of Week 2

Image result for walking

So here it is…Im happy with my accomplishment! I increased my steps by approx 10,000 and also my kl from my last weeks 62.26 kl to my current 65.98 .

Yes this #FitbitchargeHR is still motivating me! Aside from the last two days that had me unfortunate enough to catch a wonderful flu virus which had me bed ridden for a full evening(usually the time I get my biggest walk in) and of course the entire next day ( which was yesterday). Then in my foggy state of mind I forgot to put my #fitbitchargeHR back on after my shower today leaving me to feel so utterly disconnected :(. However as I’m also still in recovery mode from this Flu attack(you know sore body aching muscles, low energy etc) my body does still need some rest and TLC , I’m certain Ill be back to my full energetic state by tomorrow.

I’m certainly happy with this accomplishment and I’m almost ready to increase my daily step goal, but I will give myself one more week.

Fitbit Updates

So I got an email from FITBIT yesterday.  I think its pretty cool that I also get a weekly summary of my progress, thanks FITBIT.

It looks much prettier in my actual email, however I was unable to  cut and paste the info as I hoped I could.

Im sharing some of the info but not all of it. I don’t know if anyone wants to see my caloric intake :), if you do Il be glad to share. I’m under eating, so one thing for sure is I have to increase my food intake, and Im certain that looks like planning my meals better. Truth is Im so not use to eating so much food and I really need to get this part of my life in check!

I’m also a terrible sleeper, I’m not surprised to know 3 of the last 7 days I slept for under 6 hours…however seeing it in print certainly does make me realize I need more sleep, something else to work on for sure.

Anyhow , I’m still happy with my progress!

This is how many more calories I should have eaten. The more I walk, the more I get to eat( or should) eat..imagine that…I cant keep up!

Fitbit- Week 1 down- what have I’ve learned….

Well here I am. I’m now at the end of week 1 having used my recently purchased Fitbit Charge HR for the past seven days.

My first goal was to challenge myself to meet 10,000 steps a day.
So before I go any further with my personal review I wanted to display my stats for the week…ta daaaaa!!!

Weekly Totals
• 89,566 steps
• 225 floors
• 62.21 kl

Now with those awesome stats there is no way in the world I could feel anything but proud!

 3bd43aa.jpg

What amazing piece of wisdom can I share from my experience?…hmmm…well the first thing I learned is that I walk a lot more that I thought I did in a day, in general that is. In fact many days I have far exceeded the goal that I had set (who woulda guessed that?)

Prior to using this device I had no idea that I had such a busy step day. I’m not saying I would’ve reached my new set daily set goals without the Fitbit motivating me, especially the cost related motivation, but truth is I have never really had such an accurate pedometer reading before, never, and I’ve owned a few pedometers. As a reflection I now feel this knowledge itself is empowering!

Biggest question ??? Did the Fitbit motivate me? Hell yeah!

And not just the device, but the whole package that comes as part of the experience in owing a fitbit, aka the membership site, the friends support, menus, badges, motivating prompts and so much more. When I bought it I really didn’t know much except I had to have one.
I love the feeling of being able to be in control. This simple knowing of really getting a true picture of my health seemed to be just out of my reach before my #Fitbit purchase.

This knowing equates to the new found knowledge and power of self discovery that is only a result of the fitbit package, as you can trust me when I say I could write my own book about whats out there as I may very well have tried most, if not all methods and products that are suppose to inspire or work to keep you motivated to exercise and eat right.

The online #Fitbit tools allowed me to enter in my caloric intake so I could truly track how much food I still needed to eat for the day, or not eat.

Of course you may think its simple to know what to eat if you are healthy, but that not always the case if you totally blow out your metabolism from yo yo dieting as I have.

Truth is I often under-eat which ultimately causes my body to store fat as a stress response to a message that I’m in starvation mode.

The online tools coupled with the constant calculations of the steps I take resulting in burned calories is the quintessential key to understanding what my person, my body, my very own specific needs are in terms of what I have to do to get to where I need to be in my health.

Im excited for week 2

Maybe I’ll even set a new goal soon..I’ll check back at the beginning of week 3.

Woot Woot !
